Who Doesn't Love a Good Tassel? Part 3: The Triple

I always love things that look more complicated than they really are. The Triple is one of those things.

  • Using a deck of playing cards in their box or your cell phone, wrap the first color around the shortest dimension of the playing card box for a total of 70 wraps.

  • Cut an extra length approx. 12” long, and fold it in half. Insert the folded edge of the yarn through the eye of a tapestry needle.

  • Insert the needle through the top fold of the wrapped tassel strands and remove the tapestry needle.

  • Pull the tails of your extra length of yarn through the looped end and pull to secure it around the tassel strands.

  • Knot the end tightly against the head of the tassel to secure the tails.

  • Carefully slide a pair of sharp scissors into the bottom fold of your wraps being sure to pick up all of the loops and cut.

  • Cut a 10” length of yarn, make a slip knot with a tail as long as the tassel, and tie it about 1/2 inch down from the top of your tassel to form the tassel neck.

  • Wrap and knot the ends to tightly secure. Thread the ends onto a tapestry needle and bury the tails into the middle of the tassel.

  • Trim the bottom of your tassel to tidy it up.

  • Now use the second color to make another tassel in exactly the same way.

  • Next use the third color to make a tassel, but this time only wrap your form 50 times instead of 70 times. The innermost or bottom tassel of the cluster needs to be a bit skinnier than the other two to fit inside neatly.

  • Once you have made three tassels, thread the extra length of yarn at the top of your first color 3 tassel through a tapestry needle.

  • Sew through the underside of a color 2 tassel like you’re stringing beads.

  • Pull snug, and make a knot at the top of color 2 tassel then sew back through color 2 tassel to bury the attachment. Remove needle. Trim ends to tidy up.

  • Using the tapestry needle threaded onto the extra length at the top of your color 2 tassel cluster, sew up through the bottom of the MC tassel, pull snug, and tie a knot to secure, then go back down through the color 2 tassel to bury the tails and trim.

  • Use the long tail of the color 1 tasses to secure your Triple to your project.
